The Çağlama is a stringed instrument that combines features of the guitar and the bağlama. It was completed in 2004 by Ömür Kılıçaslan, with support from his friend Çağlayan Örge. According to Kılıçaslan, the Çağlama is “a bağlama played with guitar technique.” Its strings are guitar strings, but the neck is neither like that of a bağlama nor a guitar; it is specially designed for the Çağlama. The strings are slightly longer than on a guitar, resulting in higher tension on the neck. Therefore, a metal rod runs along the neck to balance the tension (similar to the “truss rod” found on guitars). The frets are arranged logarithmically like on a guitar, but additional frets are added to produce the microtones and comma notes characteristic of the bağlama.
