American musician, poet and multi-instrumentalist Arik Dov
presents his brand new EP, The Man, set to release on February
21, 2020. A stunning collaboration between Arik and German
bassist and experimental artist, Martin ‘Malo’ Riebel, The Man
channels the beauty and rawness of their live show and Arik’s
intensely honest songs.
Recorded live in Malo’s living room in Leipzig, Germany, and
later overdubbed by violinist Jörg Blumenstein and Israeli
percussionist Nimrod Lieberman, The Man is a short
autobiographical ride through the last 1.5 years of Arik’s life.
It includes the acclaimed single, “Phone Call From God,” a
contemplative piece that reflects individual vulnerability in
the face of one’s past, present, and future.
Honoring the style and sounds of Bob Dylan and Cat Stevens, the
recordings are bare to the bone, minimalist, and caught in the
moment, usually on the first take. Arik’s tenor voice travels
from soft whispers to enormous roars. The wood of the bass
creaks ever so slightly throughout the recordings, giving the
listener the feeling of sitting right by Arik and Malo’s side as
the duo performs. Violins, scattered throughout like soft
strokes of a paintbrush on canvas, and the upright bass, both
bowed and plucked, create a foundation for Arik’s voice to stand
upon.
The songs on The Man are sincere:
I’m not saying I don’t love you, no I’m not
I’m not saying I wanna leave you, not I’m not
I’m not saying I think I could do better, no I’m not…
I’m the man when I’m feeling high
and I’m damned when I lose my mind
I’m a million different shades of the same damn color
and I just can’t decide
Arik’s humanist approach to creating music resonates in every
song on The Man, encompassing the wide variety of emotions that
we all feel.
In this noisy world, Arik’s songs remind us to take a step back,
breathe, and enjoy the moments we have on this earth.
